Superhero Logic

"Power does not come from a place of agitation. True power comes from a place of calm."

I recently did a fundraiser at the JCC where Master Spinner Johnny G said this quote.  I liked it so much, that I added it to the Quotes section of my blog on the left.  In sports it can be used to think about form -- good form is controlled, solid, without a wasted movement.  In business, I think it refers to good leadership.

Cycling around San Francisco has required a lot more power than I imagined, with all of the hills.  Friends who have gone riding with me have directed me to routes that are very indirect -- they often cycle out of their way to miss a hill or two.  I decided to hire my personal trainer Lex again and get an endurance leg routine going with her.  By the end of the workout, I was exhausted and started carefully watching my movement so that I wasn't wasting effort.  Lex remarked that my form was getting better as I got more tired, and I told her the quote.  She laughed.  "That sounds like Superhero Logic."

I know that she was thinking of "With great power comes great responsibility" from Spiderman, and I was thinking of both quotes as I watched the new X-Men movie.  The climactic scene is set in San Francisco and, if I were living in that universe, I don't think I would be biking over the Golden Gate Bridge anytime soon (see pic below).  The franchise is known for waxing philosophical, and the new movie almost embodies that quote.  Professor X, Magneto, Wolverine...  every example of power came from a place of calm.  The movie is dividing critics, but I liked it.  I hope it's not the last of the series, and I hope they make a movie that un-does some of the damage this film did, and not just to the Bridge.

As I left the theatre, I began to ponder which mutant power I would want.  I think if there was a mutant power that let me detect and avoid hills on my bicycle, I would be happy.

Over the Bridge

My cousin Elaine once mentioned how difficult it is to play tourist in a place once you live there, and I now know she is right.  I've wanted to go on the Alcatraz evening tour for 8 months now, and only recently managed to get there when friends Cheryl & Christie visited me from Canada.  Today, I finally got to use my bike to go tour some of Marin and ride over the Golden Gate Bridge when my friend Val generously played guide (it's only my second trip over the bridge since moving here!).  It's amazing what is in my backyard.  The Golden Gate Bridge is now the #1 tourist attraction in the US.  Now that the weather is turning, I am hoping to finally get out and burn some calories exploring some of the terrific views the Bay Area has to offer.

Missing everyone at home,
